The Perseverance Awards

The Perseverance Awards are $1,000 scholarships designed to celebrate two South Lyon students (one from each high school) who have overcome significant challenges in their lives or demonstrated dramatic academic improvement throughout their high school careers. There is no GPA requirement, only that eligible students must be accepted and plan to attend an academic, vocational or technical school or program in the fall.

Phoenix Dolby-Arnoldy

SLHS, 2024

Born with a "one in a million" condition, doctors told Phoenix and his family that he would never be able to swim, climb or play any sports. From an early age, he was determined to surpass all predictions and doubts - he refused to allow anyone to tell him what he could not do. And he succeeded. Over time, his hard-earned resolve spread into all areas of his life, where he has excelled in academics, extracurriculars and community service, with a particular interest in environmental sustainability. Actively working toward his Eagle Scout status, he is a student leader, a member of his school's robotics team, a co-founder of East's Sustainability Club, and a self-taught musician who does some star-gazing in his free time.

He will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall, where he plans to study Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences.

Logan Leclercq

SLHS, 2025

Called out of school at the beginning of his senior year so he could rush to the hospital, Logan understands all too well how life can change in an instant. When his father died unexpectedly, he was transformed in ways he didn't even realize were possible - he lost his leader, his biggest supporter, a person he admired tremendously. He knew nothing would ever be the same for him - that this was an irreplaceable loss - but he also knew that his mom and sister needed him, that they all needed each other. He resolved to support them in any way he could, taking on a third job and trying his best to balance school, work and soccer. He listened when people who knew his dad told him stories and gave him advice. Throughout the course of his senior year, Logan has gotten stronger in ways he wouldn't wish on anybody else - but he knows that he'll eventually be able to share happy memories without feeling so much sadness: "My dad was a great man, and I'm going to continue to grow from him and his lessons."

Logan will be attending Schoolcraft College in the fall, where he also plans to play soccer at the collegiate level.

Congratulations to past SLEF Perseverance Award Winners!
